To Kill a Mockingbird - Part I

We have completed reading Part I of the book. Lee intentionally separates the novel into two parts to separately establish the two main plots. What do you consider to be the driving force of the plot in Part I? What themes do you see emerging from the novel? Use textual evidence to support your insights.
