  1. One fact about Edgar Allan Poe that is very interesting is that he joined the U.S. Army in 1827 when he was only 18. Another interesting fact is that Poe lived in Baltimore for a while, which is not too far from where we live in New Jersey. The last interesting fact is that Poe married his 13-year-old cousin, and he began to lose his struggle with drugs and alcohol after she had died.

    1. One interesting fact of Edgar Allan Poe's life is that both of his parents died before he was the age of three. Fortunately I have never experienced this, but I do understand how this can devastate a young soul, never being able to know their real parents. Second, the death of Poe seems to still be a mystery, some think he was murdered, some believe he died from alcoholism, some believe he died from numerous diseases. Lastly, Poe enlisted in the army when he was unable to care for himself on his own, due to gambling debts.

  2. One interesting fact is that within three years of Poe’s birth both of his parents had died, and he was taken in by a wealthy tobacco merchant John Allan and his wife Frances Valentine Allan. Another interesting fact is that Allen was broke for a majority of his life. He took up gambling and burned his furniture for warmth. And when he was 27 he ended up marrying his 14 year old cousin. The last interesting fact is that once he died one of his literary rivals, Griswold, wrote a memoir that portrayed Poe as a drunk, womanizer with no morals or friends. This was ultimately aimed to rid of Poe and his works but actually had the opposite effect and drove the sale of Poe’s books to an all time high.

  3. One interesting fact that I found about Edgar Allen Poe was that he went to school in England for 5 years. While there, he learned Latin, French, math, and history. I find this interesting because I was not aware that he had left America. This also shows that he was well-educated. Secondly, Poe was known to be an alcoholic. His drinking problems affected his education, and he had to drop out of school. A third interesting fact is that his death is a mystery. No one is fully certain of the cause of his death, which has led to many myths and urban legends.

  4. An interesting fact that is from the biography of Edgar Allan Poe is that both of his parents were travelling actors before they died only a few years after he was born. Also, his foster father was extremely frugal. In failing to provide full tuition for Poe when he went to the University of Virginia, Poe was forced to burn his own furniture for heat. Last, the life of Edgar Allan Poe is often misunderstood because a rival writer, Rufus Griswold, wrote a biography to spite him after his death. This is where he gets his reputation as an insane, friendless drunk. Unfortunately for Griswold, said reputation actually boosted Poe's popularity.

  5. Edgar Allan Poe attended the University of Virginia, but had to leave a year later because his foster father could not pay for it. I think this is interesting, because it seems that the most creative writers and artists dropped out of school. A few years after attending the university and then the army, Poe married his cousin, Virginia. In 1849, he was believed to have died from "acute congestion of the brain". However, when his body was examined years later, it was shown that he may have had rabies.
